Alicante is the largest and most important city on the Costa Blanca and something of its unofficial capital. The province of Alicante has approximately 1.8 million inhabitants. For visitors, Alicante has several interesting sights and a perfect city beach. To get an overview of Alicante, it's best to head up the large mountain right in the center of the city, where the Castello de Santa Barbara is located. The great castle, Alicante's most important monument, was built by the Moors more than 1,000 years ago, but was later greatly expanded in the 7th century. Alicante has a great city beach. The wide Playa de Postiguet starts right in the centre and is one kilometre long. In summer the beach is quite crowded, much more so than in November. In Alicante's large marina, right opposite the city centre, there are yachts worth several hundred million euros. Yacht fans love to come to Alicante to take pictures of yachts, because here one gets quite close to the dream boats. In Alicante you will find plenty of high-end boats. The old town of Alicante still looks very Spanish despite the many tourists. Prices in restaurants, tapas bars and pubs are still low. The main boulevard (called the Rambla in Spain) is the Explanada de Espana, which runs parallel to the Alicante harbour. Just beyond it in the old town are the elegant town hall and the famous San Nicolas de Bari Cathedral.
